BELOW IS MY WORK IN PROGRESS AND COMPLETED WORK
THE FINAL SHOWREEL
Gorilatopus
In terms of the production, the above showreel was done in stop motion, the character had motion blur added to it as part of the transformation and then the hologram was practically done with added tweaking and editing in after effects.
Below is part of the production process. With this below footage one could probably see that
different scenes weren't edited properly. The character was a bit jerky and there were also other issues that had to be taken into in consideration such as colour correction and lighting.
Gorilla dance with an added hologram effect on it.
On this below video . I shot the film in stop motion on a green screen and thenI took the footage in after effects where I tweaked added colour and light to bring in that Hologram feel to it. chose to add a hologram effect to the production as to add an element of mystery and transformation to the character bas it moves from one stage to another. The process wasn't smooth sailing but in the end I enjoyed it.
My character before the transformation.
This was also done in stop motion and the overall look of the film was done in adobe effects. I struggled with timing and as like always ,I also got to understand more and more about how one needs to do to get that smooth animation especially when shooting at 24 frames per second.
MY PERSONAL ACCOUNT
Below is part of my personal statement in regards to preproduction , production and post production.
POST PRODUCTION
I have always found post production fascinating because it is that part of the film making process one hasto stich up things together to give the film the overall and final look. Most of my production was done in adobe premier and after effects because I found those software easy to use and work around. In relation to this film I didn't have enough time to piece together all the different scenes to get the desired look I had in mind.
PRODUCTION
CAMERA SETTING
I have used a 200mm lens during the shooting to increase the quality of the film and did set t my Camera lens to 32, with an exposure of f22 for a great depth of field and a shutter speed ½ a second to avoid capturing a lot of light and minimise the jerky movement. What I sort of realised as well was that I always had light flickering in my finished shots had to set the camera to manual setting. The shutter speed will be between 1/4 and 1/10 with an ISO of 100 to avoid less grainy pictures.
TECHNICALITIES OF THE PROCESS
The whole process of creating the set for the film has been a bit tricky in the sense that even drilling the holes where the character's legs will be fixed. I drilled holes at first that were too far apart from each other and and then I later realised that the holes where too far apart so I had to drill some holes in between. Also what I have realised is that I should have used a table with a thin top layer , why because that would help in deciding the character's stride and the up and down movement of the torso.I had to make the depth of the holes where the tie downs will go through shallower.
I have also made sure that I didn't put lot of props along the way of my character so that they did not interfere with my character's walk. Then another aspect I had to take into consideration was where to place the camera angle .My shots will be full shot where the full character will be seen.
The below video clips are some of the stop motion rushers I did as was creating the final show reel
On this below video clip I found out that working with skeletal armatures is a bit more easier when it comes to timing . The reason being that it's easier to get a good grip of the armature whilst moving different armature parts.
With the below video clips, I was trying to see if I could animate the character with the background at the same time. That's why I tried to animate the water flowing in a different direction and the character moving in an opposite one.
Another problem I have faced in animating the character was that of where and how to frame the shots. It came late during my shooting when I realised that the only best position to place the camera was actually the position I was animate from. I was faced with a an issue where I had to practically use a quarter of the set. The problem with that was that it was hard for me to show the audience the narrative. Having said that I had to shoot different scenes from different camera angles and piece everything to create the final showreel.
The whole process was an eye opener and I would to delve more into the visual effects in the forseable future.
Below is some of the final armatures I used in my animation.I have created many different armatures and along the way I broke so many pieces . In the end I had start all over again .This was one drawback of stop motion in the sense that I did spent a great deal of time just trying to create the final armature for my film.
During the production of the above showreel I have looked at various videos on you tube about gorillas and basically their anatomy. And also in addition I had looked at how some other stop motion artists created their work.Below is the video of Ray HarryHausen and lubinera which helped me during the process.
Ray HarryHausen and the Mighty Joe Young.
Principles of animation by labudinera.
The Normal world of Don before being metamorphed.
These are some of the backgrounds I created for the scene setting .I was a bit disappointed with the image quality of these background images' resolution especially played onto a large screen .I had to adjust the aperture, ISO setting and at last managed to come up with much more better pictures.
I have used different colour and light settings as I was looking for the suitable background setting. For the fist time I have got to understand the meaning of over exposed and well exposed setting and also how to create scene depth by sing colour contrast.
With these below backgrounds, I have played with the lights to bring in
different mood to the film.
Below is how the setting will probably look in the final rendition
The Background and set design process of Gorilatopus
The below video clip is one of the trial runs I created was done as I tried to visualise the final act of the story setting. This video clip sort of gave me the green light of the possibility of creating the Gorilatopus creature. For once I realised that I could try something out of my comfort zone and try to create a creature using a rod and string puppet that would mimic a creature that that lives on an alien planet.
This below video is one of the background settings I have created and what I liked about is the colour and light composition
This video footage was shot in a water tank and due to technical impossibilities and camera angles when it comes to shooting I decided not to film the scene in a water tank.
These below backgrounds were created using water and mixed media, this was was all in search for the best background that will help sell the story.I will probably refer to some of these foreground and background pictures during the production process .
The alien planet during night time
A bird's eye view of the alien planet during the day. This was created by the used of mixed media.
Finally I came up with the below background settings which I will be referring to during the production of my film. The below pictures will try to narrate the story as it moves from the normal world transcending into an alien planet where both Don and Briggy will be transformed into holograms.
THE STORY IN PICTURES
Normal world-the woodland next to Don's enclosure.
I have created dry foliage , dark shadows to introduce a haunting scene to the setting.
BRIGGY's deserted house showing a surreal setting.I have used strong colours to enhance that effect.
A long shot of the setting
As part of the composition I have reversed this scene and his was all done to bring in some mystery and visual effects.
I will bring in lighting to help solidify the character change. The lighting bolt effect will be created in after effects. a lighting bolt like this one will be created in after effects. The lightning bolt provides the logic of the character change from Don to Gorilatopus.
Soon after the added mystery of reverse shots, smoke and lighting bolt Don gets his soul removed and gets metamorphed into a hologram and gets bolted into another planet. My intention is to add some visual effects to bring in some logic and relevance in the sense that this character transition is some form of redemption, death, re-incarnation and after life
The below pictures are of the black hole I created which Don will get catapulted through to an an alien planet .This black hole created from a cylinder cardboard box, coloured with acrylics and glitter.
Don will be transformed into a Hologram like the one below and finds himself bolted onto the alien planet through a black hole like the one above.
Some of the the alien planets I created , These planets will help the story's narrative by bringing in a surreal , alien element to it.
The aerial view of the alien planet where the story's final act will take place.
Other sets created with different light tones showing different mood settings.I have used LED lighting and diffusers during the process.
The world of Don after being metarmophosed
Some of the creations I did , hopefully I will refer to them during the production process.
The alien planet shot from a distance. This was created by glitter and LED lighting. I will use these backgrounds at the beginning of the final act when Don gets catapulted through the black hole.
The normal world again, I will probably use these background scenes as part of the final set. Here everything will be restored to normality . The set will have props put in, mixed media added on to show life . I will add water, rain and smoke and sound effects and in order to achieve this I will use editing software such as adobe premier and after effects in implementing these effects.
I will probably use the setting below as my final set for Gorilatopus
Below are some of the scene setting creations I made .I will probably refer to them to during production.all these creations were made out of mixed media.
REFERENCED BACKGROUND IMAGES
Below are some of the referenced pictures which helped me in my set design,

COLOUR SCRIPT REFERENCE.
The setting of my story was created with the help of the colour theory exercise I did in my second year. These are the referenced exercises that influenced me in creation of the dark, bright tones in my set design.
During the actual production I also paid attention to attention to the art of lip synching and face replacement.
In order for me to begin the process of lip-sync I had to refer to a few blogs and one in particular was Nathan Flynn’s Animation blog. What I liked about this blog is that I got to understand the minute details I ought to pay attention to when doing mouth and replacement.
Roughly I will be doing say 2 minute of
dialogue and the dialogue will have pauses in between. Looking at the time
factor I decided to create roughly 20 different mouth replacements faces for my
lip sync, thus including the brow movement.
I will
partition the head into four different pieces. I have got the back of
the head resin plate, the front face, which consists of the forehead and the
top part of the nose .The eye socket compartment and the lower part of the face
that has the cheeks, the nose and the teeth. All these pieces will snug in
nicely with the help of the neon magnets that were originally casted together
at the start of the casting process.
When Don turns into Gorilatopus, I decided
not to have dialogue at this part of the film, I have casted the head in
urethane resin, and I have smeared beeswax underneath the iris so I could
animate it and basically to add life into him.
